Discover Saheliyon-ki-Bari

Nestled along the tranquil eastern banks of Fateh Sagar Lake, Saheliyon-ki-Bari — the Garden of the Maidens — is one of Udaipur's most exquisite and romantic heritage sites. This ornamental pleasure garden, with its marble pavilions, lotus-filled pools, and gravity-driven fountains, was created as a sanctuary of beauty and repose for the young women of the Mewar royal court. Today, it stands as a living testament to the refined aesthetic sensibilities of the Maharanas of Udaipur and the enduring grace of Rajput garden architecture.

A Garden Born of Royal Tradition

The origins of Saheliyon-ki-Bari are intertwined with one of the most enchanting chapters in the history of the Mewar dynasty. The garden was commissioned by Maharana Bhopal Singh, who ruled Udaipur from 1750 to 1778, as a special retreat for the forty-eight young maidens who accompanied a princess bride to Udaipur as part of her dowry from a neighboring royal house. These maidens, known as saheliyan or companions, had left their own homes to serve their princess in her new life, and the Maharanas of Udaipur wished to offer them a garden of unmatched beauty as a gesture of honor and hospitality.

Some historical accounts also attribute the garden's construction to Maharana Sangram Singh II, who ruled from 1710 to 1734, suggesting that the foundations of this ornamental pleasure garden may have been laid even earlier and subsequently expanded and embellished by his successors. What is certain is that Saheliyon-ki-Bari reflects the golden age of Mewar's garden architecture, a period when the Maharanas transformed their capital into a city of lakes, gardens, and palaces that rivaled the finest royal cities in all of India.

The tradition of providing pleasure gardens for royal women was deeply rooted in Rajput court culture, where the women of the zenana led lives of considerable refinement behind the palace walls. Saheliyon-ki-Bari was conceived not merely as a decorative landscape but as a complete environment for leisure, contemplation, and the enjoyment of nature — a place where the maidens could stroll among lotus pools, listen to the soothing sound of fountains, and find solace in the lush greenery that surrounded them on all sides.

Marble, Fountains & Lotus Pools

The architectural design of Saheliyon-ki-Bari is a masterful expression of Rajput garden aesthetics, seamlessly blending Mughal-inspired water features with distinctly Mewari craftsmanship and sensibility. At the heart of the garden lies the spectacular lotus pool, a central water body adorned with sculpted lotus blossoms carved from pristine white marble. The pool is surrounded by marble walkways and bordered by delicately carved kiosks and pavilions that offer shaded retreats from the warm Rajasthani sun, each one a miniature masterpiece of stone carving and ornamental design.

Perhaps the most remarkable feature of Saheliyon-ki-Bari is its ingenious fountain system, which operates entirely on the principle of gravity and water pressure without the aid of any mechanical pumps. The fountains are fed from a reservoir located at a higher elevation near Fateh Sagar Lake, and the natural pressure generated by the difference in water levels sends graceful jets of water cascading through carved marble spouts in a continuous, effortless display. This gravity-fed engineering, devised in the eighteenth century, continues to function flawlessly to this day, a testament to the extraordinary hydraulic knowledge possessed by the artisans of Mewar.

Throughout the garden, visitors will encounter finely sculpted marble elephants standing guard at the entrances, their trunks raised in a gesture of welcome and auspiciousness. The marble art on display includes intricately carved friezes, ornamental jali screens, and decorative motifs drawn from the natural world — flowers, birds, and scrolling vines rendered with a delicacy that rivals the finest stone carving found anywhere in Rajasthan. The lush green lawns that frame these architectural elements provide a vivid contrast of color and texture, completing a landscape of extraordinary harmony and visual refinement.

A Stroll Through Royal Tranquility

Walking through Saheliyon-ki-Bari today is to step into a world where time seems to slow and the cares of the modern age dissolve into the gentle music of flowing water and the fragrance of flowering trees. The garden unfolds in a series of interconnected spaces, each with its own character and charm, from the grand central lotus pool with its surrounding colonnade to the intimate alcoves and shaded sitting areas tucked away among the greenery. The overall effect is one of refined serenity — a quality that the Maharanas of Udaipur cultivated with deliberate artistry throughout their capital.

The eastern bank of Fateh Sagar Lake, upon which Saheliyon-ki-Bari is situated, provides a setting of extraordinary natural beauty. The garden's terraces and pavilions were carefully oriented to capture views of the lake and the Aravalli hills beyond, creating a seamless visual dialogue between the cultivated landscape of the garden and the wild beauty of the surrounding terrain. On clear days, the waters of Fateh Sagar reflect the sky and hills in a mirror-like expanse, and the garden seems to float upon the edge of an endless canvas of blue and green.

The garden is particularly enchanting in the early morning, when soft golden light filters through the trees and the fountains send their delicate sprays dancing into the cool air. The late afternoon brings its own magic, as the setting sun casts long shadows across the marble pavilions and paints the lotus pool in shades of amber and rose. Whether visited at dawn or at dusk, Saheliyon-ki-Bari offers an experience of profound tranquility that connects the visitor to the timeless elegance of Mewar's royal heritage.
